The Infectology Center of Latvia conducts the following multi-form research:
I Projects of fundamental and applied research, joint projects and doctorate degree
projects in the area of HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis, tick-borne encephalitis and
diphtheria financed by the Latvian Cuncil of Science. The most significant projects
are the following:
1. Joint Project Nr.06.0035 Acute and chronic infections: mechanisms of infectious
agents pathogenicity, persistence and resistance development, ways to effective
diagnostics and treatment (directors: prof. L.Vīksna, assoc.prof. A.Martinsons)
and its subprojects:
· Nr.06.0035.01 Introduction of molecular approaches into diagnostics, prognostics,
therapy, and containment of viral hepatitis (director prof. L.Vīksna).
· Nr.06.0035.02 Tick-borne encephalitis: nitric oxide metabolism and its clinical,
biochemical and immunological consequences (director prof. B.Rozentāle).
· Nr.06.0035.04 Investigation of HLA II class antigens molecular structures and
its associations with the different clinical forms of HCV infection. Immunoethiopatogenesis
studies (directors: prof. A.Sochnevs, prof. L.Vīksna).
· Nr.06.0035.05 Study of HIV-1 mutation pattern associated with drug resistance
in Latvia (director prof. L.Vīksna).
2. Projects:
· Nr.04.1344 Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection: qualitative and quantitative aspects
of HCV persistence (directors prof. L.Vīksna, Dr.biol. I.Sominska).
· Nr.05.1821 Transformation of liver in hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection: pathomorphological
mechanisms, clinical, bichemical and immunological consequences (director Dr.med.
V.Sondore).
· Nr.04.1203 Damages of central nervous system due to excessive increase of manganese
in the body, clinical signs and symptoms and evaluation of treatment effectiveness
with antidotes (helatores) (director assoc.prof.V.Liguts, director in ICL prof.
B.Rozentāle).
II Clinical trials in drug research.
III Applied research in infectious diseases to develop the definite questions regarding
to pathogenesis, diagnostics and therapy of infectious diseases (studies in the
area of liver fibrosis and cell apoptosis).
IV Basic and applied research in infectious diseases (international projects):
· The Euro SIDA network 2001-2006. Clinical and virological outcome of European
patients infected with HIV (joint project with Hvidovre University, Denmark; director
in ICL prof. L.Vīksna).
· European Network for diagnostics of Imported Viral Diseases (ENIVD); project
together with Robert Koch Institute, Germany; director in ICL prof. B.Rozentāle.
· SPREAD (Strategy to Control Spread of HIV Drug Resistance). EC programme, director
in ICL prof. B.Rozentāle.
The results of these research projects are reflected in various forms of publications
in local and internationally cited articles and in other materials (abstracts,
proceedings, reports). Particular novelties and findings are made ready for patenting.
The dedicated personnel of the Infectology Center of Latvia actively takes part
in various international, scientific and practical forums to discuss and solve
various types of topical infectology problems. The Center has organized various
international congresses, symposiums, workshops and seminars, such as 2nd and
7th Nordic-Baltic Congress on Infectious Diseases in 1996, 2006, Vaccination Day
(in 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005), Baltic States Congress on Hepatology in 2002, 3rd
Baltic Region Conference Together Against AIDS! in 2003 and more.
ICL also serves as a base for the training of infectology residents, family doctors,
and lab specialists. In addition, it also serves as a base for scientific and
practical activites for professional associations such as Latvian Infectologists
Association, the Latvian Hepatologists Association, and partially for the other
professional associations (laboratory specialists).
To promote the Professional development of young specialists in infectious diseases,
annual scientific and practical conferences are organized at the Infectology Center
of Latvia, in which young colleagues lecture about current infectology problems.
